David Sanborn, whose fiery alto saxophone flourishes earned him six Grammy Awards, eight gold albums and a platinum one, and who established himself as a celebrity sideman, lending indelible solos to enduring rock classics like David Bowie’s “Young Americans,” died on Sunday. He died after a long battle with prostate cancer, according to a statement on his social media channels. The statement did not say where Mr. Sanborn died. Drawing from jazz, pop and R&B, Mr. Sanborn was highly prolific, releasing 25 albums over a six-decade career. The King has received more than 7,000 letters and cards from across the world since his diagnosis earlier this month, the palace revealed. The British monarch also said the messages had “reduced me to tears most of the time.”Buckingham Palace announced on February 6 that the 75-year-old British King had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer and would be stepping back from public-facing duties while he undergoes treatment. The monarch was filmed shaking hands with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as he arrived at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday afternoon. Though the King has stopped carrying out public engagements while he undergoes his cancer treatment, he is continuing with his duties as head of state. Prostate cancer has been ruled out to CNN by a royal source, who did not provide any further detail. Prince William, Charles’ son and the heir to the throne, and Queen Camilla are expected to take on more public engagements to account for Charles’ absence.
